Some weddings stay with you long after the last image is delivered. Joy's June wedding at Bella Donna Chapel in McKinney was one of them.
June in Texas means heat, golden afternoon light, and a kind of warmth that shows up in every single frame — not just the temperature, but the energy of the people in them. Joy carried that warmth from the moment I arrived.
Bella Donna Chapel — McKinney, TX
If you haven't been to Bella Donna Chapel, picture this: a Roman-style footbridge over a lake, imported Italian iron gates, hand-carved wooden doors, marble mosaics, and hand-painted frescoes inside a stone chapel that feels like it was transported directly from a European village.
It's located in McKinney's Adriatica Village, about 30 miles north of Dallas — and it is, without question, one of the most photographically stunning wedding venues in all of DFW.
I've photographed weddings across Dallas, Plano, Frisco, and Fort Worth. Bella Donna Chapel is in a category of its own. The natural light through the stained glass is soft and painterly. The stone architecture gives every portrait depth and texture. And the lakeside surroundings mean you have beautiful backdrops at every turn, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns golden.
For a June wedding, that golden hour hits around 8pm — and it was absolutely worth staying for.
Joy's Wedding Day
Joy got ready surrounded by the people she loves most, and the mood was exactly what I hope for at every wedding I photograph: calm, present, unhurried.
She wasn't rushing through getting ready to check boxes. She was actually there, talking, laughing, taking it in. That's the kind of energy that translates directly into photographs.
The ceremony inside the chapel was intimate and emotional. Bella Donna holds around 130 guests, which means the ceremony feels close — you can see the expressions on faces across the room, feel the collective breath when Joy walked in. As a documentary photographer, I work quietly in these moments. My job is to be invisible and present at the same time.
Golden Hour Portraits at Adriatica Village
After the ceremony, we had time for portraits around Adriatica Village — and June light in North Texas does not disappoint.
The Roman-style footbridge over the lake is a must. The reflection in the water, the iron gates behind, the warm stone — it photographs like a destination wedding without leaving Texas. We spent time along the lakeside as the sun dropped lower, and those are some of my favorite frames from the entire day.
For Couples Considering Bella Donna Chapel
A few things I always tell couples planning a wedding here:
Build time for golden hour portraits. June sunset in McKinney is late — around 8:30pm. If your venue allows it, plan portraits for that last hour of light. The warm glow off the stone and water is unlike anything else.
The chapel feels intimate, not grand. Around 130 guests maximum. Your vows feel close. Your guests will hear every word. If you want your ceremony to feel personal rather than performative, this space delivers that.
The stone bridge is non-negotiable. Every couple I work with at this venue gets portraits on the footbridge. It's iconic for a reason.
Consider The Sanctuary for your reception. Just a short walk within Adriatica Village, it shares the same European architectural aesthetic. Your visual story stays completely cohesive from ceremony to reception.
